Here are some interesting notes on LHP Jon Niese as he gets ready to make his 2015 debut on Friday night in Atlanta:
- He allowed three earned runs or less in 27 of his 30 starts in 2014, third most in the National League.
- Niese has allowed three earned runs or less in 30 of his last 33 starts, dating back to September 13, 2013. He has a 3.21 ERA in 224 innings over 35 starts since that date.
- Niese went 3-0 with a 1.65 ERA in four starts during Spring Training.
The remarkable part about this is Niese has done it while dealing with arm problems. Things were clearly night right with Niese last year – his velocity was diminished and he was clearly using more of a 3/4 delivery, perhaps to help him deal with whatever discomfort he had. Whatever he did, he adjusted, and that pleased his teammates and people with the team.
