Nationals OF Bryce Harper made some presumptuous remarks about his team and earning a ring when they opened Spring Training in February.
“To be able to have a guy like Scherzer come in? I just started laughing. I was like, ‘Where’s my ring?’ You know what I mean? It’s stupid. It’s absolutely stupid how good our staff is,” Harper told Mark Zuckerman of Comcast SportsNet in February.
But in an interview with Kevin Kernan in today’s New York Post, Harper paid his respects to the Mets rotation.
“I believe in the guys in my clubhouse. But you look at the Mets and you see their starters. Whew,” Harper told Kernan. I mean for the next 10 years, it’s unbelievable. I get chills just thinking about it. It’s unreal. It’s fun to watch.’’
Harper is particularly fond of watching Matt Harvey.
“I just talked to him the other day. It’s good to see him back. Even facing him, you get excited. Even if he punches me out, he’s so much fun to watch,” he said.
Yes he is, Bryce.
Harper did stand by his comments about essentially automatically earning a World Series ring.
“I truly believe that comment I said about the ring,’’ he said.
Harper has proven to be quite the talker in the early part of his career. He kind of reminds me of a younger version of Jimmy Rollins. Harper is talented, but Rollins did a little more to back up the talk, with all due respect. But, he has a lot of swagger and confidence, as well he should.
In the end, the best thing the Mets can do is prove Harper wrong. And, that’s done by winning baseball games, against the Nationals in particular.
