Despite high expectations, Terry Collins intends to remain calm no matter what

Terry Collins 1 slice

M BaronRaised expectations, a general manager who was toying with the idea of dismissing him last year despite a thin roster, yet Terry Collins intends to remain calm and not worry about his job security if the Mets get off to a slow start in 2015, according to Mike Vorkunov of the Star Ledger.

“What we gotta do and go out and play and be patient. I don’t think just because if we lose a couple of games in a row I need to look over my shoulder.”

Regarding Sandy Alderson’s comments about possibly dismissing Collins last year, – which you can in a book authored by Steve Kettmann titled Baseball Maverick – Vorkunov says the two haven’t spoken about the issue or any added pressure which might lead to Collins’ dismissal.

Unless things go horribly wrong early, Collins and his staff should survive most any kind of early season struggles. But, that doesn’t mean struggles won’t lead to discussions and won’t lead to speculation, and everyone associated with the Mets will undeniably be faced with the daily interrogation about Collins’ job security until they stop struggling or he ends up being fired.

Collins deserved the opportunity to manage and strategize with a roster which has the potential to win, such as the one he has now. I don’t always agree with his decision making in-game, but I’ve also understood he’s been dealt a bad hand more often than not, especially in the bullpen which has at least partially forced him to overuse relievers and put them in unfavorable situations.

But even if Collins continues to go against the grain, if they win, he’ll survive his strategy. That’s all that matters in the end.
