Daniel Murphy managed to avoid opening the season on the 15-day disabled list after participating in minor league spring training games in Port St. Lucie over the last week.
Murphy told reporters he was always hopeful he would be available for Opening Day despite the injury late in camp.
“I was really, really blessed the last couple of days that I was in Port St. Lucie,” Murphy said, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. “I really felt like it held up on me. I was able to open it up and test my hamstring and it felt good. Fortunately, I was able to get here on time.”
Given Murphy has the green light to play today, Murphy doesn’t intend to favor his leg or hold anything back in the short-term.
“Hopefully it’s just go out and bust it — play the way I’m capable of and the way I feel like I always play, which is hard,” Murphy said.
The injury is still fairly fresh, considering he injured the hamstring less than three weeks ago. These things normally take four weeks or more to heal. It’s probably why Murphy is going to get some extra time off over the first week to allow the leg continue to heal.
That probably means Ruben Tejada will get some starts over the next week. It’s safe to assume he will play second base, considering Sandy Alderson has said repeatedly Wilmer Flores is the club’s shortstop.
