Vic Black could return by April 12, still has work to do

Vic Black remains on track to return from the disabled list when eligible next Sunday against the Atlanta Braves, as he’s been pitching in minor league games in Port St. Lucie throughout the last week.

However, on Friday Terry Collins told reporters in Arlington while he remains optimistic Black will be back next weekend, he has yet to throw back-to-back days.

With the Mets carrying eight relievers north on Monday, it lessens the urgency to bring back Black prematurely, especially since he missed most of Spring Training with shoulder soreness. There’s no harm in taking the conservative route if necessary, especially since shoulder injuries can be very dicey.

But if he’s ultimately ready at some point this week, there’s no sense in burying a valuable power arm on any kind of rehab assignment in Port St. Lucie.

  1. I see the reason to make sure Murphy is ready to go for Opening Day. I do not have the same opinion on Black, only because we have good depth in the bullpen. So much depth, that the Mets are considering bringing eight (not including Black) relievers to Washington. With Murphy, Plan B was basically Ruben Tejada. Also, to be frank, Murphy is a better overall contributor to the Mets than Black, which is why there is more press on Murphy`s return, but, it`s hard to compare a 2b`man with a RHP.
