Logan Verrett will make the Rangers Opening Day roster

Earlier this week, Logan Verrett – who the Mets lost in the Rule 5 draft in December to the Orioles – was claimed by the Rangers on waivers.

It was somewhat surprising, considering Buck Showalter told Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com there was a good chance the Orioles would carry Verrett on their Opening Day roster. He certainly did everything to show the Orioles he was worthy of a roster spot, pitching to a 1.50 ERA in eight appearances for Baltimore this spring.

Nevertheless, he is now in Texas, and before the game, Rangers GM Jon Daniels said Verrett would make Texas’ Opening Day roster, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

He is still subject to Rule 5 draft rules, meaning Verrett must remain on the Rangers active roster the entire season in order for them to secure full rights on him.

Verrett would have to pass through waivers again and then be offered back to the Mets for $25,000 in order for the Mets to get him back.

Verrett started for Texas on Friday against the Mets and allowed a run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings. He went 11-5 with a 4.33 ERA in 162 innings over 28 starts for Triple-A Las Vegas in 2014.
