Michael Conforto will begin his year in St. Lucie

M BaronUnsurprisingly, the Mets have decided to put one of their top prospects on the fast track to the big leagues.

Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports the club will start OF Michael Conforto – their first round selection in the 2014 first-year player draft – at Single-A St. Lucie, skipping Low-A Savannah altogether.

Conforto is a very exciting prospect for the club, and it doesn’t seem like he’s going to be long for the minor leagues. Conforto’s bat is said to be very advanced, and it showed both last year and at times when he was invited to play in big league games this spring. He’s a big kid with quick hands and a short stroke, and has shown an ability to hit with authority to all fields.

He has admitted his defense is a work in progress, as left field is a new position for him. He only started playing the outfield in college, so it’s going to take some time for him to round into form defensively.

Conforto, who turned 22 on March 1, played in 42 games for Single-A Brooklyn in 2014 and hit .331 with an .851 OPS, three home runs and 19 RBI with ten doubles, 16 walks and 29 strikeouts in 186 plate appearances.

  1. I think you might be the only person who would describe putting Conforto at St. Lucie as the “fast track.” If he was sent down to Savannah, it would have been an unthinkable travesty. The key here is that he spends half the season in Binghamton.

  2. We watched him many times in PSL-
Can be explosive / also a klutz, as he is only a kid and hasn’t got a clue yet about which way to explode ! But, Juan Lagares learned quickly once he got to the Bigs, so we are thrilled for his fast track status⚾️
