Daniel Murphy homered on Friday, will meet the Mets in Washington

M BaronThe Mets remain hopeful Daniel Murphy will be available on Monday for the season opener in Washington.

Murphy continued along that route with no reported issue on Friday, going 1-for-5 with a home run and a sacrifice fly in a minor league game in Port St. Lucie.

Yesterday, Sandy Alderson wouldn’t commit to Murphy being available on Monday, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. However, the Mets are hopeful Murphy can avoid the disabled list and start at second base on Opening Day, writes Kristie Ackert of the Daily News.

“Dan looked tremendous. He looks great at the plate, but it’s the daily grind (we worry about),” Collins said, according to Ackert. “We certainly have to be monitoring his workload, but we’re hoping that the next couple of days he gets a little extra work in, then we’ll look up this weekend and he joins us after.”

After Thursday’s game against the Cardinals, Sandy Alderson told reporters while it’s not clear Murphy will be available on Opening Day, he will fly to Washington this weekend and meet the club there.

If Murphy is unavailable, he would be placed on the disabled list retroactive to nine days prior to Opening Day. Ruben Tejada will likely get the start at second base instead, and Daniel Muno will go north with the club as a backup infielder.

  1. Muno gave himself a good chance to crack the roster at some point this season, if not opening day.
