Sandy Alderson discusses Duda/Lagares, starting rotation, and team camaraderie

BaronMets GM Sandy Alderson was a guest on Wednesday’s telecast, discussing the on-going contract discussions with Lucas Duda and Juan Lagares, the acquisitions of Jerry Blevins and Alex Torres, as well as the fifth starter competition between Rafael Montero and Dillon Gee, and more.

Sandy Alderson scrumAlderson did not confirm Dillon Gee had won the fifth starter job in the rotation. He said they’re still in the process of formulating a decision. He said Montero has pitched well enough to open eyes, but could go the more conservative route with Gee.

The team is having discussions on contract extensions with both Duda and Lagares.

“We’ve had conversations and we’ll see if they’re culminated,” Alderson explained. “If we get something done, great. It reflects and interest in our part to keep those players together, and I think it reflects an interest on the part of the players in wanting to stay with the Mets.”

Alderson referred to the original contracts signed by David Wright and Jose Reyes in 2006 as models for the potential deals for Duda and Lagares.

In addition, Alderson said he is most pleased with the developing camaraderie among the players, and credits Mike Barwis and Kevin Long for their influence in the clubhouse.
