As has been anticipated all winter long and throughout spring training, the Mets have placed OF prospect Cesar Puello on waivers, reports Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.
Puello never had a strong chance to make the club out of camp. He is also out of options, meaning the Mets cannot send him to the minor leagues unconditionally.
If Puello clears waivers, the Mets could retain his rights by outrighting him off the 40-man roster and sending him directly to Triple-A Las Vegas.
The Mets have always loved Puello’s tools, but even as late as this winter, they just didn’t feel he could be a valuable member of the big league roster. He’s got a great arm and has shown promise with his bat over the years, but it’s been up and down for him since he came back from his PED suspension, to the point Wally Backman benched him for a portion of the 2014 season.
Puello, 24, has hit .265 with one RBI in 41 plate appearances over 21 games this spring. He hit .252 with 20 doubles, seven home runs and 37 RBIs in 318 at-bats Triple-A Las Vegas in 2014.
