Mets have not engaged Scott Boras about a contract extension for Matt Harvey

M BaronWith the Mets reportedly close to signing contract extensions with both Lucas Duda and Juan Lagares, it would seem logical the Mets are trying to achieve cost certainty and control for future seasons.

Such control would be able to give them a clearer picture of their future payroll, and potentially allow them to secure some of their young starting pitching to long-term deals.

However, in the case of Matt Harvey – who is arbitration eligible for the first time in 2016 – the Mets have yet to approach his agents about a possible extension, according to the Star Ledger’s Mike Vorkunov.

In addition, Harvey would not acknowledge to Vorkunov if he’d consider signing a long-term extension with the Mets at this time.

This stands to reason considering who represents Harvey. Scott Boras is well known for maximizing earnings for his clients through the arbitration process and taking them to free agency.

To be fair to the Mets, they should see how Harvey rebounds from Tommy John Surgery over the course of this year before making this consideration.

However, with Harvey’s cost likely to rise dramatically through arbitration beginning next year, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Mets at least attempt to get some kind of deal done for their ace sooner rather than later.
