RHP Vic Black is slowly making progress from the weakness and soreness which has plagued his shoulder for three weeks.
Black threw another bullpen session in Port St. Lucie on Monday, and Terry Collins told reporters after Monday’s win over the Marlins Black could throw in a minor league game on Wednesday.
However, both Collins and Sandy Alderson hinted it was unlikely Black would be ready for Opening Day, increasing the likelihood the right-hander will start the year on the 15-day disabled list.
If that’s the case, the Mets will have to make one or more decisions in the bullpen once Black is ready to return. If the Mets don’t trade a starting pitcher, it seems logical to expect the Mets would drop Sean Gilmartin and go with two left-handed relievers to make room for Black.
If the Mets do trade a starter, the Mets could slot Rafael Montero or Dillon Gee (depending on who gets moved, of course) into the rotation, which would make it easy to slot Black back into the bullpen.
This whole is worth watching over the next 2-4 weeks, especially with Bobby Parnell possibly returning by mid-April as well.
