On Monday, Daniel Murphy fielded ground balls at second base and ran the bases at Tradition Field. But Murphy is still not running the bases in minor league games, leaving a lot of doubt he will be ready when the Mets set their active roster for Opening Day this weekend.
Yesterday, Sandy Alderson said it was still possible Murphy could be ready for next Monday, but they may not decide whether or not to place him on the disabled list until this weekend, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.
If Murphy is available, it’s logical to expect the Mets will reassign Daniel Muno and Matt Reynolds to Triple-A this weekend. However, if Murphy cannot go – which appears to be the way this is headed – Muno is most likely to be promoted in a utility infield role until Murphy is activated.
If Murphy does begin the season on the disabled list, his stin can be backdated up to ten days before Opening Day, provided he doesn’t appear in a Major League game. That means if Murphy is ready, he can return by the first weekend of the season in Atlanta.

He won’t be ready, he’s got another 8-10 days at least.
