The Mets are on the road as they face the St. Louis Cardinals in another exhibition matchup. They square off at Rodger Dean Stadium at 1:05 PM in Jupiter on Sunday. Here’s what I’m looking for in today’s game…
Dillon Gee continuing to round into form.
While Dillon Gee didn’t allow a run against the Houston Astros in his last start five days ago, he was shaky doing so. In four innings, Gee scattered four hits and a walk, striking out one. It’s hard to expect more from Gee as he’s slated to be the fifth starter on this team. We know what he is, and that’s a back-of-the-rotation starter who will, on most nights, give you 5-6 quality innings on the mound–anything more is gravy. Still though, it’s not like Gee’s been terrible… He does have a 2.45 ERA this spring…
How Matt Reynolds handles second base.
It may not mean all that much in the grand scheme of things, but I’ll still be looking at how Reynolds does starting at second base on Sunday afternoon. It was reported by SNY’s Steve Gelbs on Saturday that Reynolds is very unlikely to make the Opening Day roster as the team’s second baseman.
The only way Reynolds could make it is if Daniel Murphy is out for an extended period of time, which, right now, the team isn’t expecting. Still though, this could be one of Reynold’s last chances to impress with the big league team as we enter the final week of Spring Training.
Is the left-handed reliever situation decided?
After Jack Leathersich was sent to minor league camp last week, the same happened to Scott Rice immediately following Saturday’s game against the Nationals. These moves now leave Sean Gilmartin and Dario Alvarez as the only left-handed relievers remaining in big league camp.
While various reports continue to surface saying that the Mets are looking at a myriad of external options to fill the void, right now, at least, it appears that the race is over for left-handed reliever. If no move is made, I would expect both Gilmartin and Alvarez to break camp with the team. The Mets did not announce who is scheduled to pitch aside from Gee today, so we’ll see how one or both of them fare if either see time in today’s game.
Today’s game can be seen on MLB.tv and listened to on WOR 710 and MLB Gameday Audio.
