Matt Reynolds unlikely to make the Opening Day roster

R MacLeodBoth Terry Collins and Sandy Alderson have expressed their concerns to reporters that Daniel Murphy may not have enough time to be ready for Opening Day due to a hamstring injury. As a result, many fans have been hoping to see shortstop prospect Matt Reynolds in his place.

However, according to “multiple people” in the Mets front office, Reynolds is unlikely to make the team, Steve Gelbs reported on Saturday’s SNY telecast.

The only way Reynolds could make the Opening Day roster, according to Gelbs, is if the injury to Murphy was significant enough that it would cause him be out for an extended period of time, something he says the Mets don’t believe is the case right now.

So far this spring, Reynolds has hit .378 with two home runs and six RBI.

Gelbs also reported that the Mets see Ruben Tejada, who will likely get the bulk of playing time at second while Murphy is out, as “strictly a utility guy,” and someone who is not an every day player at this point in his career. The team does believe that Tejada has the skill set to be a successful bench player, Gelbs said. Tejada has hit .279 with no home runs and 10 RBI in 15 games this month.

These comments from Gelbs lead me to believe that Danny Muno has a good shot of breaking camp with the team and getting some playing time at second base along side Tejada. Muno, 26, has yet to make his major league debut, but is hitting .390 with a home run and five RBI in 41 at-bats this spring.
