Jenrry Mejia may have hit the dead arm stage of camp

Jenrry Mejia 1 slice

Throughout Spring Training, Jenrry Mejia had been able to dance in and out of trouble, but yesterday it caught up to him against the Cardinals.

Until yesterday.

Mejia allowed three runs on two hits with two walks in the eighth inning of Friday’s 5-4 loss to the Cardinals in Jupiter. The three runs scored on a three-run home run by Rafael Ortega.

“I think a lot of those guys are starting to run through that whole stage where that dead arm stage with them is starting to take place,” Terry Collins said in reference to Mejia. “But you’ve got to go through it and go through it now, because you don’t want to have it happen during the season.”

Whether it’s Mejia or Jeurys Familia, I tend to not worry about these uneven performances in Spring Training. The stakes aren’t high, and for power armed, closer-type relievers, the adrenaline just isn’t there in a lot of these cases, and as Collins said, there is a process these guys go through to get ready for the season. It’s not an excuse for poor performance, but as long as these guys are healthy and getting their work in, I expect they’ll be fine once the bell rings next Monday.
