Despite doubts about his ability to be ready for Opening Day, Daniel Murphy continued his attempt to avoid the disabled list.
Murphy played in a minor league intrasquad game in Port St. Lucie on Saturday and went 2-for-5.
However, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Murphy only jogged lightly to first base and then came off the field after doing so.
Yesterday, both Sandy Alderson and Terry Collins were not optimistic Murphy could be ready by Opening Day, which is a week from Monday in Washington.
“Any hamstring is typically a minimum of a couple of weeks,” Alderson told reporters on Friday. “For him to come back sooner than roughly Opening Day would be a little surprising. But given the way he felt, and the fact that it was a very mild strain, it’s still a possibility he will be ready.”
Murphy – who has not played since last week – unlikely to play in a major league game through the end of Spring Training. That way, the Mets can backdate a possible stint on the disabled list by ten days, meaning he can return by the first weekend of the season in Atlanta if he’s ready.

Interestingly enough, Murphy is traveling with the team to Jupiter. I wonder if he will be playing in a minors game there. I can’t see them playing him in a majors game until he has played in a minors game at 100%.
