The Yankees are hosting the Mets at 1:05 PM today at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. Here are some of the things I’m looking for in today’s game:
Matt Reynolds is at second base.
Reynolds has spent the bulk of his camp at shortstop, but his services could be needed at second base in the event Daniel Murphy opens the year on the disabled list. He has said he is most comfortable at shortstop, so I’m curious to see how he tries to readjust to second today, considering he hasn’t played there much over the last year.
Rafael Montero is making his first start of the spring.
Montero has made two relief appearances this spring, but there are whispers he could be challenging Dillon Gee for a spot in the rotation. Today’s start could go a long way towards figuring out his role for certain on the club, but it'[s clear Montero has a job on the staff one way or another.
Next up in the lefty relief competition: Sean Gilmartin
Gilmartin is among the scheduled pitchers today for the Mets. The Rule 5 pick last worked on Sunday against the Yankees, issuing a walk in 1 2/3 innings. While a small sample size, he has held lefties to a .231 average this spring, which could bode well for him as the Mets get closer to deciding how the bullpen will line up. He should have the opportunity to put his craft to the test against some of the lefties in the Yankee lineup today.
Today’s game can be seen on the YES Network or MLB.tv, and can be heard on WOR 710 or MLB Gameday Audio.
