Mets option Jack Leathersich, send him to minors camp

M BaronThe competition for the left-handed relief roles in the Mets bullpen was reduced by one on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mets optioned LHP Jack Leathersich, and re-assigned him to minor league camp.

Leathersich was making strides in his most recent outings, having allowed only one hit and no walks in his last six relief appearances, a span of 3 2/3 innings.

The left-handed relief situation for the Mets is in obvious flux. So, if Leathersich can continue to take the steps forward he showed recently, and show an ability to get left-handed hitters out routinely at Las Vegas – something his splits suggest he struggles with – then he could get his first taste of the big leagues in short order.

Overall, Leathersich allowed five walks and five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings this spring.

Sean GilmartinScott Rice, and Dario Alvarez are the only left-handed relievers remaining in big league camp.
