Brian Kenny concludes Matt Harvey was the best pitcher in baseball in 2013

Matt Harvey 1 slice

M BaronCould the Mets have the best pitcher in baseball? MLB Network’s Brian Kenny believes it’s certainly a possibility.

Kenny is best known for his sabermetric analysis on his show, “The Shredder.” In a study for Sports On Earth, Kenny breaks down Matt Harvey’s 2013 season sabermetrically and concludes Harvey was the best pitcher in baseball that year, despite missing the final six weeks of that season.

“When it came to the things a pitcher is most responsible for — the strikeouts, walks and home runs — Matt Harvey wasn’t just the Great Met Hope, he was the best pitcher in baseball, inning for inning,” Kenny explains of Harvey’s 2013 season.

Kenny notes Harvey led all pitchers in Fielding Independent Percentage (FIP), was second in both strikeout and swinging strike percentage, and SIERA (which adds his groundball rate to his (FIP).
