Over the last week, Vic Black has been suffering from what has been described as weakness and soreness in his right shoulder.
While an MRI on his shoulder last weekend came back clean, Black experienced continued soreness after throwing off of flat ground a few days later, and was shutdown.
Black is going to try throwing again again today.
According to Kristie Ackert of the Daily News, Black is expected to throw today with hopes of resuming his throwing program.
Even if Black passes today’s test, it isn’t clear when (or if) Black will appear in another Grapefruit League game or whether or not Black will be ready for Opening Day.
Assuming Black isn’t ready, Erik Goeddel is the only other right-handed reliever on the 40-man roster who fits the criteria for replacement. However, Buddy Carlyle – a non-roster invitee to big league camp – is a very logical consideration, and Terry Collins told reporters on Thursday he’s been particularly impressed with Zack Thornton this spring. To me, Carlyle makes the most sense and he has pitched very well this spring.
Black has appeared in only two games this spring, allowing a run in two innings.
