The Mets are hosting the Cardinals today at 1:10 PM in Port St. Lucie. Here are some of the things I’ll be looking for during today’s matchup:
It’s time for Bartolo Colon to show some consistency.
Yes, Colon is a pro and knows what he’s doing, but he has gotten lit up in his last two starts, allowing eight runs on 12 hits in five innings over that span. I’m hoping to see some higher quality strikes from the veteran this afternoon as the club begins to stretch his arm out in advance of the regular season.
Daniel Muno is starting at second base.
Terry Collins said on Thursday he intends to evaluate Muno for a utility role, in the event Daniel Murphy has to miss an extended period of time with a strained hamstring. Muno isn’t young anymore, so it’s about to be make-or-break time for the career minor leaguer. He fits the profile for a top-of-the-order hitter, as he gets on-base a lot, has some speed and makes a lot of contact, although he’s hitting down in the order today.
Buddy Carlyle is pitching with new hope of making the team.
A week ago, I would’ve said there was only a minimal chance Carlyle could make the team out of camp. But, with Dillon Gee back in the rotation and Vic Black’s status uncertain with shoulder soreness, Carlyle suddenly has a decent shot of making the team. He’s allowed only five hits and a walk in 4 1/3 innings so far this spring, so a continued strong showing in these games will only help his case for a 40-man roster spot.
Today’s game will be televised on SNY, and is also available via MLB.tv.
