Opening Day starter could be one of three pitchers

M BaronTerry Collins has yet to make a decision on his choice to be the Opening Day starter.

However, he does know who it probably won’t be.

Bartolo ColonAccording to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, Terry Collins said he will either start Jacob deGrom, Jon Niese, or Bartolo Colon on Opening Day against the Nationals in Washington.

Collins told Rubin both Dillon Gee and Matt Harvey are not candidates to make the start.

Teams tend to line their rotation up for the regular season right about now, and given when Colon’s next start is coming, he’s in line for April 6. He’s been my guess for the start the entire spring, if for no other reason than he has senority over everyone else in the rotation.

Nothing is official, but it would seem right now the rotation is lining up to be Colon, Harvey, deGrom, and then Gee or Niese in some order. I could see them swap Harvey and deGrom so deGrom goes in the home opener and Harvey goes in the second game of that series, but we will see.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter who gets the start. A lot is usually made of this decision, but it’s more honorary than anything else. It’s one of 162, and they have five very worthy candidates to get the season rolling.
