Rafael Montero’s path hasn’t been very defined over the last year. But it seems while some uncertainty remains, he could be on the big league roster come opening day.
Sandy Alderson told reporters even though Dillon Gee is back in the rotation, they will evaluate Montero as a starter, Matt Ehalt of the Bergen Record tweets.
Whether as a starter or reliever, Montero seems likely to make the team out of camp, says Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.
As I wrote this morning, Montero can now serve as rotation insurance, so these remarks are not surprising. If Montero makes the team out of the bullpen, he could serve as a swingman alongside Carlos Torres, which could further determine where he might thrive.
However, Role consistency is important, especially for pitchers who are still developing. That was evident with Jenrry Mejia earlier in his career, and through last season to a degree before he found a home as the team’s closer.
So, it would be prudent to decide on a path for Montero sooner rather than later.
