On Sunday, Sandy Alderson said he is hopeful his internal candidates for the left side of the bullpen would improve over the next couple of weeks, but will remain open minded to external options.
With that said, the Mets are said to be scouting Orioles LHP Brian Matusz, according to Dan Martin of the New York Post.
Mostly a flyball pitcher over his six year career, Matusz, 28, has found his niche as a left-handed reliever with the Orioles over the last two years. Specifically in 2014, Matusz, 28, appeared in 63 games and finished 11 of them. He allowed 17 walks in 51 2/3 IP while going 2-3 with a 3.48 ERA, holding left-handed hitters to a .223 average.
In his career, Matusz has held lefties to a .211 average and a .620 OPS.
Matusz – a classic four-pitch pitcher with good control – is 5-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 146 relief appearances in his career.
