I wrote last week in regards to Dillon Gee these things have a tendency to work out, for better or for worse.
Well, Gee’s situation reached a conclusion, perhaps for his benefit but certainly under unfortunate circumstances.
On Monday afternoon, the Mets made a quick and mostly obvious decision on Zack Wheeler’s replacement in the rotation, assigning Gee that spot, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo.
“That’s why we’ve got him. He’ll be the guy,” Terry Collins said, according to DiComo.
Gee had been scheduled to start Thursday’s split-squad game against the Astros in Port St. Lucie. He started the first game of the spring for the Mets against the Braves in Disney World, allowing two runs in two innings. Since then, he has made three relief appearances, allowing two runs and five hits in five innings in that role.
Gee has made it clear he’d much prefer to start, so this can only benefit him as he’s back in a more familiar role. I’m sure he would admit he had wished his assignment came on different circumstances, however.
