Three things we learned: Mets once again sloppy in a 7-4 loss to the Marlins

Roger Dean Stadium slice

The Marlins (5-3) defeated the Mets (3-6) by the score of 7-4 today at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter.

Sloppy defense hurt the Mets once again.

The Mets defense has not been good early in these spring games. The Mets committed three errors in the seventh inning, raising their total to nine in nine games. Matt Reynolds committed a throwing error which allowed a run to score, and Scott Rice launched a ball into center field on a pickoff attempt later in the frame. Then, after Don Kelly singled off of Rice, Kirk Nieuwenhuis sent his throw into the dugout which turned into a three-run single.

I know it’s Spring Training, but simply put, this has got to get better for the Mets all around. Unfortunately, it’s something I have feared could be a problem for this club in 2015.

#HarveyDay.

I wrote about Harvey’s outing earlier today, which you can read here. In short, while he wasn’t at his best, he was fine. He was reportedly throwing hard while focusing on his off-speed pitches for many of the 49 pitches he threw.

The most important thing, as I said last Friday, is how he feels tomorrow, and how he feels preparing for his next outing, which should be against Boston in Fort Myers next Monday.

Noah Syndergaard was very impressive.

Syndergaard struggled in his first appearance last Friday. He got into some trouble and couldn’t stop the bleeding during that start. Today, however, was a different story for the highly touted Mets prospect. He was throwing hard, maintained his focused, used all of his pitches, and dominated Miami for the most part during his three innings of work.

One of the criticisms against Syndergaard has been he becomes a one-dimensional thrower when he gets into trouble. He seemingly forgets about his other pitches in those spots, and the wheels have had a tendency to fall off the wagon over the last year. Not today – instead, he was a pitcher, and a damn good one. Hopefully took a step in the right direction.

Other Notes:

Ruben Tejada was 1-for-13 during Spring Training entering today’s game, but he recorded two consecutive doubles in his first two plate appearances, the first one driving in a run. He walked with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to knock in a second run. He also played third base and made a couple of very nice plays, including turning a double play to help Harvey out of a tough jam in the second inning.

Dillon Gee allowed an inherited run to score in the seventh inning, but pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Gee relieved Rice in the seventh inning.

The Marlins are now 3-0 against the Mets this spring.

The Mets host the Nationals at Tradition Field tomorrow afternoon, with Jacob deGrom facing Stephen Strasburg at 1:10 PM.
