In yesterday’s 3-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves, Bartolo Colon allowed three runs in three innings of work.
“I was only scheduled to go three innings,” Colon said after his start. “I’ve got command of all of my pitches. I’m hoping to go four innings in my next start. Overall I feel pretty good.”
Colon allowed a three run home run to Freddie Freeman in the third inning, which accounted for all three runs for the Braves.
Despite the home run, Terry Collins was generally pleased with Colon’s outing, acknowledging Freeman’s propensity to hurt the Mets.
“[Colon] was fine,” Collins explained to reporters after the game. “Freddie kills us. Nothing new.”
In his career against the Mets, Freeman has a .313/.388/.549 line with 13 home runs and 59 RBI in 304 plate appearances over 72 games against the Mets.
Bartolo is a strike thrower, relies on a fastball of varying degree, and his velocity isn’t what it used to be. So, he’s going to give up his share of home runs. He’s given up 29 and 30 long balls in each of the last two seasons, and I’d expect about the same number this season. Hopefully he’s able to limit the baserunners in front of these home runs in order to limit the damage.
