Bartolo Colon looks like Bartolo Colon.
Veteran starter Bartolo Colon made his second start Tuesday, going three innings while allowing five hits, a walk, a home run and three earned runs with a strike out. Colon has essentially done what he does so far this Spring in two starts, allowing three runs while walking just one in five innings.
Colon’s a strike thrower, so he walks very few all while being more susceptible to contact, which is why, as we saw last year, there will be times where he serves up a few long balls and gets knocked around.
At this point we know what Colon is, and for the Mets, that’s the fifth starter on a very good pitching staff.
Kirk Nieuwenhuis keeps on keepin’ on.
I feel like, to date, I’ve talked about Kirk Nieuwenhuis in just about every post game recap, which is, obviously, a good thing since he continues to produce at the plate day-after-day this Spring.
Nieuwenhuis went 0-for-1 on Tuesday, but walked twice and scored a run. Kirk continues to get on base at a rapid pace to start Spring Training, thus solidifying his place on the roster. Nieuwenhuis has struck out only three times in 16 at-bats so far.
Travis d’Arnaud looked good in his first game back after cutting his hand.
After cutting his finger in a collision at second base during Sunday’s game, Travis d’Arnaud made his return to the line-up on Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves.
D’Arnaud looked good in his first game back, going 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. What I think was even more important than d’Arnaud’s run-scoring single today was when he threw out Braves outfielder Mallex Smith trying to steal in the first inning. There has been a lot of talk this Spring about d’Arnaud’s defense, something he struggled with in 2014, so it’s good to see him make an impact on the defensive side of the ball in today’s game.
Other Notes
John Mayberry Jr. went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI in Tuesday’s game. Mayberry is 7-for-13 with two RBI to start Spring.
Cesar Puello started in right field, going 2-for-3 at the dish.
Left-handed reliever Dario Alvarez pitched a perfect inning with a strikeout in relief. Alvarez could potentially make the team if the injury to Josh Edgin is a serious one.
Shortstop prospect Matt Reynolds singled as a pinch-hitter in the 8th inning.
