Josh Edgin has elbow discomfort, to have MRI

M BaronLHP Josh Edgin will undergo an MRI after experiencing left elbow discomfort, according to multiple reports.

“It’s elbow. It’s everything. Arm. It’s discomfort,” Edgin said, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York.

Josh EdginYesterday, Terry Collins told reporters he was concerned with Edgin’s drop in velocity. He was throwing 88-91 mph during yesterday’s game, during which he allowed one run while retiring only one batter.

First off, hopefully this is minor and he’ll just be shutdown for a short duration. I’d hate to see another blown out elbow in this game.

Now, this certainly explains Edgin’s early ineffectiveness this spring, but this isn’t good no matter what. Not only is he the primary left-handed reliever, he is really the only left-handed reliever who can be considered a shoe-in to make the club. If this is a long-term injury, they’re going to have a major problem in their bullpen unless they go shopping for a replacement.

As I said yesterday, I would’ve really liked the Mets to go out and get another established left-handed reliever for the bullpen. The team listed it among their objectives for the off-season, but they couldn’t find what they considered to be a suitable solution despite there being multiple free agent options available to them. Now, if Edgin is out for a while, the team could be left with a major vulnerability as a result of not acquiring any significant depth.
