What to Look For: Marlins vs. Mets, 1:10 PM

Zack Wheeler slice

The Mets (3-3) and the Miami Marlins (2-2) face each other for the second time this spring today at 1:10 PM at Tradition Field. Here is what to look for during Monday’s game:

Zack Wheeler will make his first Grapefruit League start of the spring. He started in the club’s intrasquad game last Tuesday and said he was throwing across his body during that start. He said that was a minor problem and easily correctable in time for today’s game.

Daniel Murphy makes his return to the lineup on Monday after sustaining a bruised hand resulting from a hit-by-pitch during Friday’s game against the Tigers.

Curtis Granderson will be hitting leadoff this afternoon. Terry Collins has said this spring either Granderson or Juan Lagares could serve as the team’s leadoff hitter come April. With Lagares sitting today, Granderson will get an opportunity to hone his craft at the top of the lineup.

After a good day both in the field and at the plate on Sunday, Wilmer Flores will give way to Ruben Tejada at shortstop on Monday, and will hit second. Tejada hit second on seven occasions during the 2014 season, putting up a .214/.290/.214 line in those games.

Lastly, Michael Cuddyer will start at first base for the third time this spring, while John Mayberry will start in left field. This would seem to be the logical setup during the regular season to give Lucas Duda either a day off or to protect the big lefty from a tough left-handed pitcher.

Today’s game can be seen locally on SNY and MLB.tv.

  1. I still don’t like Cuddyer in left and Grandy in right… but since that’s really the only thing I’m opposed to that the Mets are trying so far, I guess that’s a good thing haha

    1. I agree. I think their OF defense is stronger the other way around.

      1. I think if this was CitiField in it’s original incarnation, you could live with Curtis in right… but with the walls brought in, the angles less “wonky”, and with Lagares in center, I see no reason for Grandy in right. We saw yesterday that the Red Sox went first to third at will. Not to say they wouldn’t with Cuddyer, but this will be an issue into the season if Terry insists on playing Grandy where his arm will be challenged.
