In yesterday’s intrasquad game, Zack Wheeler allowed two hits and two walks in 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
Wheeler struggled with his command, but attributed his problem to a mechanical issue, which he says will be easy to fix.
“I was just throwing across my body a little bit and couldn’t make that adjustment when I was out there,” Wheeler said after his outing. “It’s something simple to fix.”
Terry Collins said after the game he isn’t concerned at all, and expects his command to eventually be refined.
“Those power guys, one of the things about is their command is the last thing to come,” Collins told reporters on Wednesday. “I thought Zack was fine. I’m going to go on what I saw last summer, and not what I saw today, for sure.”
Wheeler was throwing hard, and was using all of his pitches yesterday. He had electric stuff, but he just had a little trouble staying crisp and hitting his spots. He was supposed to throw live batting practice on Sunday, but he was forced to pitch under the covered bullpen due to rain. So, that could have had something to do with the problem. And, that’s what this time of year is for – to work out these little cob webs, build arm strength, work on repeating the delivery, and so on. I expect he will be better when he makes his Grapefruit League debut.
